Question:
How To Maintain A Feminine Voice?
UrmWhyNot Answer:
As a lot of you will know, my voice is natural, and has been this way since I was a youngin'. I didn't experience a full male puberty, and as with many other trans women, my voice never broke.I put blame partly on my exceptionally effeminate demeanor pre-transition, and a possible sub-conscious action to not let my tone of voice become deep. But as far back as I can remember, and even in old home videos, my voice is very high pitched. Even so, I have some tips to help you to speak more effeminately, as I myself can change the "levels of effeminacy" in my voice, and am very aware of how I do this. Below are 5 steps to help you achieve a more feminine vocal range. Step 1 - Posture of the back, and neck Keeping a straight back, and neck can help to give you more control over the sound you emit. Slouching, or bending your neck, and throat area will cause a raspy sound. Practice keep good posture, and keeping your neck straight Step 2 - Finding your voice break/barrier The key to speaking more effeminately can be found in practicing the ranges in your vocals, and finding where the highest, and lowest pitches and where the voice "breaks", and practicing to use the highest pitch. If you sing a G scale backward you will find the barrier between your lower and higher ranges. Step 3 - Speak with your throat in your ear I know, makes absolutely no sense does it(lol). What I am trying to is explain is in order to achieve a higher pitch in your voice, you need to tighten the laryngeal muscles in your throat, that fine tune the sound that comes from your mouth. When they are tight, they produce a higher pitched sound. Practice this until you become comfortable with using this area in your range, and it begins to sound natural. Our vocal chords have incredible muscle memory, and can learn and adapt to repetitive changes. If you watch this video of mine - Steps On How To Tell Him You're Transgendered - you will witness me changing my voice from higher to lower if you pay careful attention. Step 4 - Blending your lower range with your higher range Some trans women find it hard to do this without breaking their voice barrier, but this is the key to speaking more naturally. A blending of higher, and lower tones in your overall vocalizations will produce a more natural sound, and practice is the key to achieving it. Once you become good with using the higher ranges, then it is a good time to start taking your pitch an octave lower and practicing it until it is concrete. A good example of someone who speaks with a perfectly blended voice, would be the lovely Karmatic(Charlotte) from youtube. Step 5 - Extending your new vocals to other vocalizations(ie; laughter, coughing, sneezing, etc) Speaking with a feminine voice is one thing, yet coughing, and sneezing more womanly may be a big challenge. My best advice would be to change the sounds you make when you make these kinds of involuntary vocalizations. This will be hard to begin with, as again, these types of sounds are involuntary, but if you apply the same rules set out in the above steps, you can achieve a more effeminate profile of involuntary vocalizations. Remember m'darlin's, practice makes perfect, and you will be surprised with the results if you keep at it. Much Love, Lea |
